Balance Board
February 12 at 8:30pm
February 13 at 7pm
February 15 at 9pm
in the Backstage Theatre

this is a workshop production followed by a facilitated audience discussion

Balance Board follows the story of Charles Daniel, a Canadian Pacific Railway employee who launched the first civil rights case in Alberta history. The case was against Sherman Grand Theatre where he was denied admission to see King Lear. This story raises questions about anti-Blackness and the erasure of monumental Black heroes in Canadian history.

Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre and BAM! Black Arts Matter celebrate artistic process and artists in development. We believe audiences are an essential component in the development of new works. Following each performance of this elegantly rehearsed staged reading, audience members will be invited to participate in a brief discussion exploring their experience of the play, led by director/dramaturg Mukonzi Musyoki.

Playwright: Bashir Mohamed
Director: Mukonzi Musyoki
Cast: Mustafa Rafiqq and Onika Henry

Relaxed Performance
The Thursday, February 13 7pm performance Balance Board is a Relaxed Performance. Relaxed performances are specifically altered to be sensitive to patrons who might benefit from a more relaxed environment, including those with a wide range of social, sensory, or educational needs.

Specifically, relaxed performances may:

  • welcome children of all ages
  • be understanding of patrons who make noise
  • be understanding of patrons who may need to stand, walk, or leave and re-enter the performance
  • provide pre-show information such as plot summary and when to expect loud noises
  • extreme special effects, such as strobe lights, are reduced or softened
  • auditorium lights only slightly dimmed
  • often accommodate an earlier start time

Patrons considering attending a relaxed performance should still consider show description, as the subject matter of some shows may not be suitable for all audiences.
